Die Zweite Reformation knüpft an oberdeutsche Traditionen an und verbindet sie mit calvinistischen Ideen. Der Begriff ist aber nicht unumstritten, der Begriff der reformierten Konfessionalisierung wird meist bevorzugt. Sie beansprucht, die Reform der Lehre, wie sie die lutherische Reformation bewirkt hatte, durch eine Reform des Lebens zu vollenden (Betonung der Sittenzucht), dringt auf eine radikalere Ausmerzung altkirchlicher Relikte. Außerdem führt sie zu einer Intellektualisierung des Glaubens, getragen von einer Beamten- und Bildungselite gegen den Widerstand in der Bevölkerung.
