| [98 | Abstract] | The article focuses on Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, the steel industrialist, and his role as president of the Reichsverband der Deutschen Industrie (RDI) - the German National Industrial League - during the crucial period from the eve of Hitler`s assumption of power to Krupp`s resignation from office at the end of 1934. Drawing on the rich sources of the Krupp archives the article analyzes why big business failed to resist the process of "streamlining" which, by mid-1933, had cost the RDI its autonomy. Krupp pursued three policies designed to preserve the RDI`s economic mandate within a nazi system that valued politics above all else. First, he sought to maintain a unified command of big business interest policy. Second, he acted to prevent implementation of keynesian and state-socialist unemployment measures. Finally, he strove to moderate the regime`s racial policy concerning Jewish industrialists and managers. Although it was clear by early 1934 that none of these aims could be achieved, Krupp was forced to delay his resignation until the end of the year when the regime felt strong enough to let him go. |
