| [98 | Abstract] | In the Soviet occupied zone and later on in the German Democratic Republic the German Communists and functionaries of the state party SED reconstructed the political economy to establish their power. The expropriation of major industries provided the basis for the more and more dominating sector of the socialised economy. Nevertheless many private entrepreneurs started their pursuits again. To diminish the position of these capitalist firm owners and employers the SED and the trade union FDGB tried to establish a new balance of internal power in the private businesses and firms. But these initiatives to change the labour relations were obstructed for various reasons: On the one hand private entrepreneurs tried to behave politically opportune and to give no reason for an external intervention of the public authorities. On the other hand, also the employees in private firms retained old customs and accepted the conventional internal power standard: In many cases they refused an active role in the process of expropriation, defended the private ownership of "their" firm and were loyal to the owners and managers of the business. So the political campaigns beared no fruits and labour-relations shifted not until the private enterprises were dispossessed. |
